Raj and Sam played a game that they named Guestimedict; a portmanteau, but involving three words; ‘Guess’, ‘Estimate’ and ‘Predict’.
The game is about making informed guesses to predict and estimate. While waiting for a lift, one may predict which of the two, each currently in a different floor, would arrive, and state the confidence he has on his guess. Having booked an Ola cab and while the App says that your ride is arriving in eight minutes, one may state the confidence one has about the cab arriving within 10 minutes.
Guestimedict Game
Game for predicting events: The game starts with one player identifying and proposing an uncertain event. For instance, Raj says ‘It will rain before we reach home’. He further estimates the likelihood of that event occurring and says, ‘I bid 70 points’. In other words, he states that there is a 70% chance that it will rain before they reach home. A player can propose any such event and bid any value between 0% and 100%. After Raj announces the event and his bid value, Sam (the other player in this case) announces his bid value for the same event. If Sam considers that the chance that it would rain before they reach home is not that high, he may bid a lower value, say 40 points.
Scoring: As to who gets to score depends on whether it rained or not before they reached home. If it did rain, then Raj scores 30 points (Since Raj was more confident that it will rain than Sam. So 70 – 40 = 30 points) and Sam scores 0. But if it did not rain till they reached home, Sam scores 30 points and Raj scores 0. On the other hand, if Sam had bid 90 points (against Raj’s bid of 70 points), and if it did rain before they reached home, then Sam scores 20 points (Since in this case Sam was more confident that it will rain than Raj. So 90 – 70 = 20 points) and Raj scores 0 points.
The scores are cumulated and the first person to reach a cumulative score of 200 points wins the round.
