As a young student of the Bible ages ago, I found it consoling to hear one of our professors say that the women in the Gospel narratives are like a unifying thread of Jesus’ life story. They are present in His public ministry in Galilee and they follow Him up to Jerusalem, staying the course through thick and thin. They are close to Jesus as He breathes His last on the cross and they are the first to run to Jesus’ tomb very early after the Sabbath with the intention of anointing His dead body with spices (Mark 16:1-3). Hence, all the four Gospels unanimously report that they are the first ones to hear the good news of the Lord’s resurrection!
