The exam season is inevitably associated with words like stress, tension, worries and pressures in our minds. Be it when the exams are approaching, ongoing or when awaiting the exam results. Moreover, the stress levels increase not only for the students, but also for their parents, teachers, tutors, family members at large! However, the ultimate onus eventually falls back on the student, who is responsible for not only working towards performing successfully in the exams, but also to be able to manage the accompanying stressors eff ectively. Furthermore, besides the academic workloads, these additional stressors could vary from the worry of their parents, the expectations of the teachers, the comparison and competition with their peers, or the nagging from their tutors.
Handling exam stress for students While examinations are an inevitable part of every student’s life, and as much as they might wish to escape it, they are an unavoidable challenge. However, how the students perceive and deal with these exams would dictate, to a large extent, their experience and their approach towards such challenges as a part of their lives. Different ways in which stress can affect a child or adolescent’s behaviour include social withdrawal, increasing frequency of physical complaints, increased irritability, anger or restlessness, difficulty in attention and concentration, disturbed sleep, loss of or increase in appetite, and increase in risk-taking behaviour. Such a child might be disinterested in being with peers, and might have an emotional outburst without much provocation.While it is essential for students to be empowered with the skills and strategies to inculcate effective studying practices, it is also necessary for them to be able to cope with not just the academic demands, but also with the social, institutional as well as personal demands related to their studies.
Sleep well: Contrary to the popular saying, you need not burn the midnight lamp to study before an exam. Instead, plan your studies, and ensure that you get an adequate sleep, especially before the examination.
Adopt healthy lifestyle choices: It is a myth that caffeine, nicotine, or any other substance, can help improve your concentration during exams. On the contrary, they are likely to increase your anxiety levels, thereby making you feel more stressed! Therefore pay attention to your health, and focus on maintaining a regular and healthy lifestyle.
