The iPad Air was always the odd duck in Apple’s iPad lineup. Until now, it’s only standout feature was that it was thinner and prettier than the regular iPad while being slightly faster. That’s just no longer the case.

I got the iPad Air (2020) and combined it with the Apple Magic Keyboard, which adds a trackpad and converts the Air into a subnotebook. I added the Apple Pencil 2 for good measure, to maximize the potential of a full-multitouch device for a lot less than if I had used even the cheapest iPad Pro.

The iPad Air has a sleek but boxy design similar to the iPhone 12 and the iPad Pro. It has moved the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to the top button and reduced bezel size as a result. Apple has also added various pastel colors to the mix, such as Sky Blue and Green, but these look faded. Silver, Rose Gold, and Space Grey are still the best color options.
