Cape Longclaw
It is interesting to note the complete dissimilarity between the English and Afrikaans names for this bird. The Afrikaans name seems, in a way, to make a bit more sense. Look at the bird. The orange throat is very visible and equally descriptive. Admittedly the kalkoentjie (small turkey) part is not so glaringly obvious and one wonders where that comes from.

Family Escape
After getting the shivers again from too much city time, the Cederberg began calling my name this month. A spot of webtrawling and phoning-about soon offered up a solution to the blues: just two-and-a-bit hours from Cape town is Koningskop, which would match my needs – a good campsite and a trail that wouldn’t damage a shiny new test car.

Going bush in BOTSWANA
In the open campsites of the Mababe Zokotsama Community Development Trust, which borders the Chobe and Moremi national parks, you are not only part of the natural ebb and flow of feeding game, but, says SA4x4’s Anton Willemse, you also have to be on the lookout for other natural hazards.

The Big V Volkswagen Amarok
South Africans love to tow boats, caravans and trailers, often at the same time, and it was these land trains that were the subject of some confusion among the German hosts at the 2009 launch of the Amarok in Argentina.

Golden-breasted Bunting
One of the most rewarding spots for bird photography that I have ever been to is the Kamasinga hide in the 40 000-hectare uMkhuze Game Reserve in northern Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal. This particular hide was upgraded and virtually rebuilt a short while before our visit, and it was unquestionably designed with the wildlife photographer in mind.
