It’s late at night for Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee. Mumbai-bred but now based in Houston, the talented marine conservation artist joins us on Zoom after a busy day. Vivacious and friendly, one can sense her passion for her work within a few minutes of conversation. Folmsbee wastes no time telling us that as an artist strongly influenced by marine life, she draws much of her inspiration from the diving expeditions she’s been on around the world.
“I began diving with marine scientists and biologists, and out of personal interest, learned about marine ecosystems to add meaning to my work,” she says, regaling us with tales of the projects already under her belt — from fine art murals in Houston to works shown in Mumbai, Beijing, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Dubai and the US. Her art’s also been featured at international fairs, including Art Rotterdam, India Art Fair, Texas Contemporary Art Fair and Arte Dubai. Her latest is the ‘Aquarius Art Tunnel’ at Houston airport.

Your need to help the marine world has grown manifold since you began diving 14 years ago. Tell us about the locations you went diving. Which were the most special?
I have done 234 dives over the past 14 years. My first time diving — it was in Lakshadweep — will always be closest to my heart because it changed my life. I still haven’t seen a turtle migration the way I did back then. But it’s diving with local scientists and biologists that helps me understand what’s going on in the water better.
