Funny Broadchurch – sounds like a difficult concept to pull off, but leave it to the hilarious minds and filthy mouths of comedy team Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney, collectively known as The Kates, to smash it out of the park. Together they’ve created Deadloch, an eight-part murder mystery/ buddy-cop comedy set in a quiet Tasmanian town. It’s packed with the kind of inventive swearing that would make The Thick of It’s Malcolm Tucker blush and has more twists and turns than, well, Broadchurch. But it also deftly manages to explore themes of race and Australia’s relationship with First Nations people, and challenges the stereotypes of the crime drama genre. WHO caught up with the Kates over Zoom to hear how they taught themselves to write a thriller and discover who came up with the best lines.
