More than a week has passed since two devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, with the death toll climbing well past 35,000 and the United Nations warning that the final number may double. “We have not seen suffering and devastation of this scale in over a decade,” Johan Mooij, the response director for World Vision Syria, said in a statement. “The impact is so enormous … it could take a generation for survivors to recover.”

In the southern Turkish town of Kahramanmaraş, Mesut Hançer holds the hand of his 15-year-old daughter, Irmak, who died after their home collapsed.
