** *** Guillermo del Toro's stop-motion masterwork (co-directed by animation veteran Mark Gustafson) offers a typically unique take on the oft-adapted story of the wooden boy who wants to be real.

Set in Italy at a time when Mussolini and fascism are on the rise, the story may shock anyone with Disney's moppet-friendly classic 1940 cartoon in mind if anything, this adaptation owes more to del Toro's Spanish Civil War fable Pan's Labyrinth.
