Legendary Brazilian documentary photographer Sebasti&atilde;o Salgado's work captures human life on the margins and its intersection with nature. Throughout his 50-year career, his images, printed in his signature silver gelatin, have documented the brutality of work in one of his native country's largest gold mines, the devastation wrought by drought and famine in Africa's Sahel region, and global displacement around the world. But it's a project closer to home that fuels his latest endeavor. From September 26 to October 16, Sotheby's is holding an auction and exhibition in New York City of Salgado's photography. It will benefit his nonprofit organization Instituto Terra, which is devoted to repairing Brazil's Atlantic Forest and grew out of his work to restore the forestland that had been slashed for his family's 1,754-acre cattle farm.
When Salgado began restoring his family's land, he was haunted by the environmental degradation he had witnessed in his work. Turning the desiccated farm into a nature preserve was a way to do something about it. With&nbsp;a focus on biodiversity, the soil was repaired and the forest was replanted with native species. He planted nearly 3 million trees to capture moisture, improve the health of the soil, and provide shelter to animals.
Salgado wants his paradise to be an example of the reforestation that he wants to see replicated everywhere. Instituto Terra has a nursery with a million seedlings and has worked to revive springs around the Doce River basin in southeastern Brazil. It also offers a program that teaches conservation and restoration of native ecosystems.
The Sotheby's exhibition will marry these two passions, with images that touch on periods throughout his five decades behind the lens, including several of his famed images that focus on the extreme diversity of nature and of humanity, while supporting his next chapter. "There are pictures that I made when I was young in the communities of peasants and Indigenous people in Latin America. I have pictures that I did in Africa in the times of the big droughts," Salgado says. "It's a selection of every moment of my life." Now those moments will not only help fuel his future but perhaps our planet's as well.
