Beyond fashion, Miuccia Prada has always been a longtime advocate for art and the narratives that shape it. In 2011, the designer introduced Miu Miu Women’s Tales — a platform championing female filmmakers and femininity. Back in October, as part of the brand’s commitment as the Public Program Official Partner of Art Basel Paris, Miu Miu announced a special project dubbed Tales & Tellers, initiated by multidisciplinary artist Goshka Macuga and convened by Director of MACBA, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Elvira Dyangani Ose.
During the event, all of the Miu Miu Women’s Tales short films and videos were screened in the Palais d’léna, alongside reenactment by real-life performers. On top of that, panel discussions with directors and artists from the Women’s Tales collaborations — including American actress and director Chloë Sevigny, Canadian screenwriter and film director Catherine Martin, and Malaysian filmmaker Chui Mui Tan.
Below, Ose and Macuga let us in on the celebratory project:
L’OFFICIEL: How did this project originate?
ELVIRA DYANGANI OSE: Miuccia Prada told me she had in mind for some time to bring together the work done by Miu Miu within film and visual culture. Then Miu Miu began conversations with Art Basel about becoming the Official Partner of the Public Program. She asked me if I wanted to join the project in Paris. I said, “Of course.”
If we were to celebrate the thought-provoking way Miu Miu has of addressing womanhood, these long-term conversations both with filmmakers and also with artists — what work could refer to them and provide, let’s say, a sort of project of projects.
