DHAN ILLIANI, 25 (@DHANILLIANI)
Attempting to describe Dhan Illiani as an artist in any analytical way is a borderline-futile endeavour. She traverses within the spectrum of conceptual and contemporary art, and does so with such agility. From installations and performances to short films and fashion, the multidisciplinary artist shies away from nothing. To her, art is fluid in practice and she revels in that freedom by venturing into different interests and modes of practices—no holds barred.
How has your art evolved so far?
It changes with the phases I’m currently at in life. When I was younger, the work was mostly about identity. And since I lost my mother at a young age, it was also about navigating life as a girl and transitioning into a woman. Now, it depends on what I’m curious about. It could be social, political, women’s or even mental health issues.
You have worked on a number of collaborations. Have you turned down a lucrative opportunity because of artistic integrity or values?
Definitely. I’m very particular about responsibility and my intentions. Prior to my trip to Italy (for the 59th Venice Biennale), when Projek Rabak and I were trying to secure our funding, I was approached by a hijab brand who offered me a hefty sum to be the face of their campaign.
And you don’t do campaigns?
