I'M AN ARMY BRAT. IN 1979, WHEN I WAS 14, I moved to Central America and lived on a base. I'd go to the public library to read Creem magazine you couldn't buy it there-and learn about new wave and punk music. I started with Blondie, then moved on to David Bowie, the Velvet Underground, the Ramones. These were the dream people I was worshipping from afar. I lived my life wishing I were someplace else; I wanted to be cool, like them.
