An Aussie Dentist in Singapore

CHERRY LAI
An Aussie Dentist in Singapore

Where are you from originally? What do you miss about it?

There are two places I call home. First is Taiwan – I really miss the food in Taiwan; I usually go on a diet before flying there so I can enjoy the food a little more guilt-free. The second is Australia – I miss the supermarkets, cafés, beaches and friends.

What brought you to Singapore – and what led you to stay?

I followed my husband as he was relocated for his work. It was the myth of the two-year contract – 13 years ago. One of the reasons I stayed was for my helper, who has been with us for over 10 years; she allows me to concentrate on work without having to worry about cooking and cleaning.

What inspired you to become a dentist?

Vaseline! When I was in high school, I had a severe acne problem so my dermatologist gave me a powerful medication that dried out my face and even cracked my lips badly. During a braces appointment, the nurse saw my lips and offered me some Vaseline to soothe them. I thought she was the nicest person on the planet that day, and I wanted to be in a field where I could help people just like she did.

How would you describe your approach to dentistry and dental health?
