Soon the public did too. “A Boy Named Sue” became Johnny Cash’s highest-charting Billboard Hot 100 hit and earned him a Grammy in 1970. As an adult, the song’s narrator runs into the father who abandoned him. He’s ready to kill the man until the father says he knew he wouldn’t be around and so gave his son the name to make him strong. The narrator forgives his father: I got all choked up and I threw down my gun / And I called him my pa, and he called me his son / And I came away with a different point of view.
