Barry Du Bois 'EVERY SECOND WITH THEM IS PRECIOUS'

By rights, Barry Du Bois should be dead several times over, but the TV favourite says he is still “fighting the good fight” in the face of an incurable disease.

First diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in 2010, Barry, one of New Idea’s popular columnists, was given just three months to live. Then, when his illness later developed into incurable myeloma in 2017, Barry was warned he only had five years left.

But the gritty Leukaemia Foundation ambassador is still very much here – cherishing every precious day with his family, planning new projects and above all, staying positive.

Now aged 64, Barry is determined to survive for his 12-year-old twins, Bennet and Arabella. Barry and his wife Leonie welcomed them via surrogacy after 13 heartbreaking IVF miscarriages and four years on an adoption list.

Today the inspirational builder, broadcaster and author, who has beaten the odds so many times, simply says with a laugh, “I’ve had nine lives, that’s for sure! When you’re given a shortened life span, you realise how precious every second is. Every negative thought is a waste.”
