Q The vet explained that the underlying cause was a blood clot due to a heart condition. There were apparently no warning signs. I have a 10-yearold cat and would like to know if there is anything that can prevent this.
A THIS is feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease of thickened heart muscle.
It is the commonest heart disease of cats, although many live a normal life span without showing any obvious signs.
Unfortunately, in a minority, the signs can be severe.
Heart failure, murmurs, abnormal rhythms, increased blood pressure, and thrombus formation often localised to the blood supply to the limbs, can occur. In a few cats sudden death is possible.
Thickened muscle reduces the volume of blood, particularly in the left ventricle. This leads to problems with the heart valves and turbulent blood flow, enabling clots to form.
