Joshua Hillstead got into difficulties in the River Arrow at Alcester, Warks, on Monday evening.
Paramedics gave him first aid and CPR at the scene, but Joshua died on Tuesday with his family by his side at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
The youngster, from the city's Maypole area, suffered complications from drowning, according to Warwickshire Police.
