Three die as 48 migrants are rescued from dinghy

A rescue operation involving two boats and a helicopter was launched yesterday after a life jacket was spotted in the sea off Calais.

French maritime authorities said first aid was given to two unconscious people brought on board the Minck ship, but they were later confirmed dead at Calais.

A ferry recovered another person seen overboard, but they were declared dead at Boulogne.

Another person was also injured, the coastguard said.

A sea search for any other survivors continued yesterday.
