Political Correspondent ALCOHOL tags will be worn by 3,800 offenders over the Christmas period in a bid to crack down on booze-related crimes.

The figure is up by a third on last year's 2,800, according to statistics released yesterday.

Alcohol is linked to a sharp rise in crimes such as domestic abuse during the festive period.

Offenders can be ordered to wear a tag which takes a sample of their sweat every 30 minutes and alerts the probation service if booze is detected.

They face further court sentences or fines if caught breaching a ban.
