Dangling by his feet mid-air, hero who hacked at a frozen bomb

MEDALS belonging to a war hero who dislodged a frozen bomb with an axe in mid-air are going under the hammer.

Flt Sgt James Oldham carried out the daring manoeuvre thousands of feet over Tunisia during a wartime raid in 1942.

The two-ton bomb froze under his Wellington aircraft as it flew at 11,000ft.

But Flt Sgt Oldham bravely hacked away at it for 20 minutes while two crew held on tight to him.

Despite being peppered with enemy flak, the trio managed to free the bomb, giving it a final push with their feet to send it plummeting down on Axisheld Bizerte.
