Red alert as storm brings 90mph winds

A storm-threatening gusts of more than 90mph could be the fiercest in nearly three years.

A rare "danger to life" red weather warning was issued yesterday amid fears Storm Darragh could blow roofs off and cause trees to crash down.

The government sent an emergency alert to the phones of three million people in and around the peak danger zone at just before 7pm last night.

It covered North Devon, North Somerset and South and West Wales.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan warned: "The whole day [Saturday] is going to be very, very windy with severe gales.
