MOUNTAINEERING legend George Mallory's great-granddaughter spent the night on Everest 100 years to the day after her famous relative vanished near its summit.

Mallory and his expedition partner Sandy Irvine were last seen by geologist and climber Noel Odell on a ridge near the world's highest peak before being enveloped in gathering clouds.

Freja Mallory, 26, said after her Everest Base Camp experience: "It was a moment I will cherish for ever." She spent weeks trekking through Nepal, leaving Kathmandu on May 31, before flying to Lukla and traversing with a guide across the mountainous terrain of the Khumbu Valley and Sagarmatha National Park on the way to her final destination.
