RAPIST Christian Brueckner yesterday appeared in public for the first time since being named prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance.
The 47-year-old looked frail and gaunt as he was led handcuffed into Braunschweig Regional Court in northern Germany ahead of his trial on sex charges.
His lawyer Friedrich Fulscher said the German is in "poor health" after spending two years in solitary confinement.
He also revealed Brueckner was "stressed" about his appearance in front of the media after being linked to the Madeleine case.
Brueckner is accused of committing vile crimes against women and children in Portugal.
But his trial was adjourned after less than an hour.
Brueckner sat at a table alongside his legal team for the duration of the long-awaited hearing.
He did not glance over at around 100 journalists and members of the public who were packed into court 141.
Brueckner wore a grey linen jacket, purple shirt, black trousers and brown suede shoes.
He clutched a folder, displaying a sticker of the Palestinian flag, that held his legal papers.
