ERIC Carmen's lush but sad ballad All by Myself has resonated with millions of music fans during the lonely times in their lives.
His tracks have also featured in movies such as Dirty Dancing, which used his soft rock hit Hungry Eyes.
But the US singer-songwriter's music didn't only have a light touch.
Eric, who has died aged 74, also loved to belt out rockier tracks particularly with his power pop band the Raspberries, although catchy melodies and soaring harmonies were still to the fore.
His wife Amy said: "Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep. It brought him great joy to know that, for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy."
Paul Stanley, frontman of heavy metal band Kiss, said: "Although known to many for writing radio hits like All by Myself, Eric was a true rocker at heart.
