We share the same fight

I think of my children, all the families affected...all the victims whose stories often remain in the shadows...

AFTER a nine-year rape ordeal at the hands of her depraved husband and his 50 associates, Gisele Pelicot could have stayed anonymous during their trial.

But the 72-year-old bravely allowed the details of the sickening attacks on her to be played out in public in a bid to encourage other victims of violence against women to speak up.

And as she stood on the steps of a French court after Dominique Pelicot was jailed yesterday, Gisele declared her victory was for all of them.

She said: "I want you to know that we share the same fight.

"This case was a very difficult test for me. I'm thinking first and foremost of my three children. I'm also thinking about my grandchildren because they are the future.

"I'm thinking of the unrecognised victims, whose stories often remain in the shadows. For them, I wanted to really put this struggle forward."

Gisele, who has become a global symbol of courage for her openness, was cheered by an army of supporters when she emerged from court.

The placard-waving crowd included some who shouted "merci".

Gisele told them: "I wanted when I started on the 2nd of September to ensure that society could actually see what was happening and I never have regretted this decision.
