It's understood the 28-year-old caused the collision as he attempted to overtake a truck in his 4x4 Chevrolet by crossing into the opposite lane of a road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The truck was also damaged in the three-vehicle smash while the motorcyclist was rushed to San Vicente Fundación hospital in Medellin for treatment after suffering broken limbs and abdominal trauma.

The man, who has been identified as Sebastian Guillermo Davila Valderrama, is considered to be in a "positive" condition.

A statement from Colombian police said: "Mr Alfredo José Morelos Avilés, a forward for the Atlético Nacional club, was arrested. He was driving a pick-up truck, causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence of alcohol (grade 2), resulting in personal injuries to Mr Sebastián Guillermo Dávila Valderrama." A grade two alcohol offence is "100 and 149mg of ethanol/100ml of whole blood".
