A RARE Rangers season book thought to be the oldest of its kind in the world has been snapped up for nearly £4000.The book from season 1876-77 predated the Scottish league system and was issued four years after Rangers were formed.That season was the club's third season of competitive football and the team played at Kinning Park in Glasgow. The first match listed on the season book was a 2-1 victory over Vale of Leven, which officially opened the new ground on September 2, 1876.It included home and away fixtures against the likes of Queen's Park, Third Lanark, Partick, Dumbreck, Lennox and Alexandra Athletics, as well as matches played by the club's second 11. The season book went under the hammer at McTear's in Glasgow, where it was sold to a private Scottish bidder for £3900.James Bruce, the auctioneer's sporting specialist, said: "This is the first time we have seen a season book of this age and importance feature at auction.The 1876-77 season book is older than anything held by the club itself, making it a hugely important piece of Rangers heritage."It tells a fascinating story of the earliest days of Rangers Football Club." The highlight of Rangers' 1876-77 season was reaching the Scottish Cup final for the first time, only to lose to Vale of Leven after a second replay.
