THERE have been several times this season when I thought David Gray was going to walk the plank.It looked like feeding time for the sharks after Hibs went down 4-1 to Dundee in November.No one would have been surprised if that did happen and it gave me no pleasure in being so critical on these pages - even if my old club did deserve it.But it does feel pretty nice to be finally writing a column in which I can be positive.Some things need to be said but it's not much fun battering the boss, the board or the backline on a weekly basis.I'm not saying it will be plain sailing for Hibs from now on but this run of five wins out of six at least has punters looking to the horizon with a bit of excitement rather than dread.The turnaround has been incredible. Going back to that Dens defeat, they looked doomed.But something happened in the Aberdeen epic three days later. Rocky Bushiri's late finish to make it 3-3 has lit a fire at Easter Road.And it has been terrific ever since - even the performance in the loss at Celtic Park was decent. But it was the derby win that delighted me the most.I've played in enough of these to know what they're about.Yet I've rarely seen such a comfortable win.Forget the narrow 2-1 scoreline and the relatively late winner - Hibs were streets ahead of Hearts.I get that the Jambos are pretty brutal right now but it was still a derby and there was so much at stake.Hibs bossed it on Boxing Day and all of a sudden the picture has completely changed.Gray is no longer shark bait for a start - at least for now. It's impressive the way he's handled this season. He didn't lose the plot when it was all going to pot and he's not got carried away on the back of this revival.He's kept a cool head when others have lost theirs and you've got to hand it to him.But he'll know the hard work has only just started.The squad could still do with bolstering this month.A few weeks ago I was saying there needed to be a clear-out. That might not quite be the case now but the team will still need strengthened. The great thing is the target has changed. Not so long ago it seemed like signings would be required to get the side out of trouble near the bottom of the table.Now? A few solid recruits and we can start talking about top six and sailing into Europe. And it's not the Hogmanay carry-out talking to suggest even third might not be off the table.Who would have thought that a few weeks back.Aberdeen have gone off a cliff and the gap is down to 10. At least Hibs are looking up now and looking forward to games again. It's been a brilliant festive period and it could be an even happier new year with the trip to St Johnstone followed by Rangers at Easter Road.I'm not writing off Saints just yet but there are three points there for the taking.As for Rangers? We all know how they struggle away from home. Who knows if they'll even have a manager at that stage.Hibs fans will be buzzing again and the players will be the same. But don't underestimate how tough this period is.I used to enjoy the hectic festive fixture list - at least you didn't do much training. But you sacrifice a lot with family and friends as well as it being a right shift physically.We tended to stay in hotels overnight before games at this time of year. I'm sure Alex McLeish used to keep the keys to the rooms... While Bobby Williamson would have armed guards at the doors!You can get wired into the beer and selection boxes once you've hung up your boots.At this time of year you can build momentum if you hit form, vice versa if it goes the other way.But if Gray can stay on course, it can be a Hibee New Year.
