A MEDICAL expert group is calling for a rise alcohol in minimum pricing to 65p per unit.
The Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) says it is vital Scotland's flagship alcohol policy is uprated.
It claims MUP has directly saved 156 lives and averted 411 hospital admissions every year.
As the Scottish Government prepares to announce a new minimum unit price today, health campaigners say it must rise to keep pace with inflation.
SHAAP is also asking for a levy to be brought in to recoup the earnings made by the alcohol industry from minimum unit pricing - to fund drug and alcohol services.
SHAAP chair Dr Alastair MacGilchrist said: "Minimum unit pricing is designed to tackle Scotland's population-wide alcohol harms and now we have clear evidence it has done exactly that.
"We are hopeful that - at this critical point Scotland's politicians do the right thing for public health and vote for it to continue and be uprated."
Christopher Snowdon, head of lifestyle economics at the Institute for Economic Affairs think tank, said: "The official evaluation overwhelmingly showed the policy has failed but it is a political project and the Scottish Government was always going to stick with it.
"Scottish drinkers have paid dearly for the folly of minimum pricing and they will have to pay even more.
