GREYHOUND racing could soon be banned in Scotland.
The sport has been branded cruel by an MSP who launched a Bill to have it outlawed.
Just one greyhound track remains in Scotland at Thornton in Fife but the body which represents racing in the UK has said a ban could be worse for the welfare of animals and greater regulation should be considered.
The proposals will be detailed&nbsp;in a consultation, one of the first steps in the introduction of a member's Bill from the Scottish Green's Mark Ruskell.
He said: "This cruel practice has no place in modern Scotland.
"Greyhound racing is beyond reform and it's time to bring it finally to an end. All the evidence&nbsp;is there, from the deaths and the injuries to investigations of those who champion animal welfare.
"The risks of racing dogs at 40mph around a curved track are too great. It's dangerous and unethical." Figures from the Greyhound Board of Great Britain show 22,284 dog injuries recorded in&nbsp;the UK from 2018-22, while 2718 died. GBGB chief executive Mark Bird said a Scottish Government consultation did not propose a ban but there was a strong case for a statutory licensing scheme.
Bird added: "A ban would risk animal welfare."&nbsp;
Thornton Greyhound Stadium was approached for comment.
