A report has found that poorer households pay an extra &pound;444 for essential goods and services.
The Fabian Society said regulators should step in to ensure poorer families can get cheaper deals. It wants the introduction of a social tariff offering a 20 per cent discount on energy bills for those who are less well off.
Other suggestions include preventing firms from charging more to those who pay monthly for car and home insurance, as well as a ban on price rises within the fixed term of mobile and broadband contracts. Ben Cooper of the Fabian Society said: "This 'poverty premium' is proof markets are designed to treat some families differently and unfairly."
Martin Coppack of campaign group Fair By Design said: "It's time for Government and regulators to take responsibility and create markets that work for everyone, not just the healthy and wealthy."
Richard Kramer, chief executive of disability charity Sense, said: "Disabled people are more likely to use pre-payment meters... and can struggle to change providers due to difficulties contacting them.
"All these pave the way for higher energy bills."
