A SAMPLE of mould used by Sir Alexander Fleming to produce penicillin has sold for a record £58,500.The specimen of yellow-green Penicillium Notatum fungus on a glass disc dates back to when the famous Scots physician was working on his groundbreaking 1928 discovery.It paved the way for the development of antibiotics which people started to use in 1942 to treat infections that previously proved fatal.Fleming made a small number of mould medallions for famous people including the Pope and Winston Churchill.This sample, on blotting paper in a 2in diameter disc, was for his niece. He inscribed it "The mould that made penicillin/Alexander Fleming". The medallion, which was later sold to a private collection, fetched well over its £37,000 estimate at Bonhams in New York, setting a new world record for a Fleming mould. The previous highest price was £35,000 in 2016.Fleming, who died aged 73 in 1955, discovered penicillin by accident. He was researching staphylococcus bacteria and went on holiday, leaving samples on a bench in his lab. On his return, one sample was contaminated with a fungus and the colonies of staphylococci had been killed.Darren Sutherland, of Bonhams, said: "Fleming's discovery of penicillin changed the course of human history. It is no wonder the sample of his wonder drug set a world auction record."
