A SCOTS scientist has reacted with horror to news that the world's oceans spent 365 days in record-breaking heat fuelled by climate change.
BBC analysis of international data found ocean temperatures were at record levels every day for an entire year.
And for nearly 50 of those days, records were smashed by huge margins, with abnormal warmth surging through the world's waters.
Man-made global warming and rising emissions are mostly to blame, although the El Ni&ntilde;o weather phenomenon also helped warm the seas.
Last summer saw a "severe" marine heatwave in the Atlantic off the Scots and UK coast and there was a wave of coral bleaching and significant damage to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Environmental scientist Dr Rebecca Wade of Abertay University said: "Our oceans are connected.&nbsp;That's partly why this news is so alarming.
"The temperature rise is not localised, it is global, affecting all parts of our planet and all of our continents.
"This news is scary, even for climate scientists.&nbsp;Changes are happening faster than expected and will be hard to adapt to."
