Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves told a business conference yesterday she would cap the tax at its current 25 per cent for at least five years, after Tory instability.
She said: "There have been 26 changes to corporation tax arrangements in this Parliament alone. We can't go on like this." Rejecting calls from Tory right-wingers to lower the tax, she said: "Our current rate is the lowest in the G7.
We believe that 25 per cent strikes the correct balance.
But Reeves' promise angered some on the left.
A Momentum spokesman said: "Our public services are battered and starved of funds. Starmer and Reeves' cosying up to big business is bad policy and bad politics." Robert Palmer, of Tax Justice UK, added: "The Shadow Chancellor is at risk of backing a future Labour government into a corner. Schools are crumbling, hospitals and GP surgeries are creaking.
Reeves also refused to commit to unfreezing income tax thresholds.
Ordinary workers are being dragged into higher tax brackets due to inflation but she said: "I won't make any commitments that are not fully costed." On ITV News, she declined to condemn high bankers' bonuses.
But on workers' rights, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer made a firm pledge to "level up".
He said: "We will make work pay. Zero-hour contracts, scrapped. Fire and rehire, finished. A genuine living wage."
