ROCKY star Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the boxing film series, has died&nbsp;aged 76.
A family statement paid tribute to the actor: "Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life."
"Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognised worldwide and across generations. He was a&nbsp;beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."
Weathers started off as a professional football player before becoming a world heavyweight champion on screen.
In the 1976 film Rocky, Creed gave Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) his shot at the title. The star reprised the role in 1979's Rocky II in which Creed had a title rematch with Rocky before going head to head with Clubber Lang, who was played by Mr. T.
Weathers' character was killed off in Rocky IV by Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren).
The actor was also known for his role in The Mandalorian and receiveda Primetime Emmy Guest&nbsp; Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for his performance.
Weathers, who hailed from New Orleans, Louisiana, is survived by his sons, Jason and Matthew, who he shared with his ex-wife Mary Ann Castle, and their grandchildren.
