A PEACEFUL Scottish island was rocked by six earthquakes in one night.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the biggest of the quakes - 3.3 magnitude - hit the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides at 7.30pm on Monday.
Movement was felt on Mull, as well as surrounding islands and the mainland.
Mull resident Alasdair Satchel, 45, thought a car had crashed into his home.
He said: "I was sitting at my desk and heard a very big bang, then another very big bang and the house shook.
"We live in a wooden house and the whole house was just shaking. It made absolutely no sense.
"I wondered if the car had slipped and hit the house." Tiree resident, civil servant Richard Cooke, 35, was getting ready for dinner when he "felt the room shake". He said: "I thought it was a plane at first. Others said the quake felt like "a large explosion nearby".
David Galloway, a seismologist with the BGS, said Mull experienced six quakes within 10 minutes on Monday.
He said: "We get around 300 earthquakes a year in the UK and north-west Scotland is one of the most active places.
"The 3.3-quake on Mull was very small on a world basis but on a UK basis it is a moderate earthquake.
Earlier on Monday, two quakes were recorded in the Highlands, a 2.3-magnitude quake at Moidart and a 1.1 earthquake at Morvern.
