IPHONE maker Apple is set to face a £1.5billion class action lawsuit hearing for allegedly overcharging British users.The full trial will begin on January 13 and will run for seven weeks at the Competition Appeal Tribunal.It has been brought by Dr Rachael Kent, who alleges Apple's 30 per cent App Store commission is in breach of European and UK competition laws and that the firm is abusing its dominant position in the app market at the expense of ordinary people. If successful, it will be the first case at the reformed CAT where millons of consumers could be compensated.Dr Kent, of King's College London, has been working on the case since 2019. She said: "Many consumers would not know this is happening."In-app purchases can only be made on the App Store but Apple being able to charge a high commission on these means they are ultimately creating an atmosphere where they are shutting off competitors and overcharging millions of customers." Essentially, it means that if somebody spends £5 on an app from the App Store, Apple would receive a 30 per cent commission or £1.50. The App Store is an app marketplace developed and maintained by Apple.
