Luke Tryl, UK director at More in Common, which carried out the survey, said: "For many young people the idea of mass conscription is confined to history." Two-thirds of those aged 45 to 54 would refuse a call to fight. It was the oldest group polled and it is likely conscription would only apply to younger people.
The survey comes after the head of the Army, General Sir Patrick Sanders, suggested civilians should be ready to fight if there is a land war.
Downing Street says signing up will remain voluntary. The Army has a professional force of 73,000, down from 100.000 in 2010.
