SCOTLAND missed a target for 28,000 offshore wind farm jobs by nearly 90 per cent with ministers warned radical action is needed to bring about a green jobs revolution.
Economic think tank Future Economy Scotland (FES) said the country risks failing to create enough clean energy jobs to offset the loss of work in the North Sea oil industry.
In a report, the group warned that without a major industrial overhaul, the shift to net zero could produce no "significant domestic job creation" at all.
In research shared with the Record, FES used the example of offshore wind, where the Scottish Government had projected 28,000 workers would be employed by 2020.
However, Office for National Statistics figures show there were only 3100 full-time jobs in offshore wind in 2021-11 per cent of the total forecast.
FES warned: "At present, there is a risk Scotland's path towards net zero does not result in significant domestic job creation.
"Managed effectively, however, the transition to net zero has the potential to create more new jobs than will be lost." Although offshore wind only employs 3100 workers directly, it supports a total of 15,000 jobs through its supply chains.
But low-carbon jobs are still barely half of the 80,000 Scots estimated to be employed in the North Sea oil and gas trade.
