TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley might only have been a minute or two from safety when he died after "taking the wrong route" while walking on a Greek island.
His body was found yesterday about 50 yards from a beach and bar.
The 67-year-old TV doctor had been missing for four days.
Michael's heartbroken wife, Dr Clare Bailey Mosley, has described him as "funny, kind and brilliant".
The body was discovered behind a small wall and chain-link fence that circles the secluded resort of Agia Marina on the island of Symi.
Michael had veered off a rocky path that leads to the bar.
It is believed he may have passed out in the 40C heat or fallen due to the dangerous terrain.
If he had managed to go a short distance further, he would have reached a gate into the resort.
The purple umbrella he was carrying when he vanished during his holiday was found near his body.
His wife said: "It's devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband.
"We had an incredibly lucky life together.
"We loved each other very much and were so happy together.
"I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days.
"My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people around the world.
