BOFFINS have solved the mystery of which came first, the chicken or the egg.They reckon eggs were here way before hens appeared.Scientists from Geneva University in Switzerland say the genetic tools to create eggs existed hundreds of millions of years before birds.Their findings came after analysis of the remains of one of Earth's earliest lifeforms the single-celled lifeform Chromosphaera perkinsii.It existed more than a billion years ago and was discovered in 2017 stuck in mud in Hawaii.Boffs found once the organism's cells reached their maximum size, they divided into multi-cellular structures with striking similarities to embryonic eggs.They say this proves fertilised eggs were around before animal life began 800million years ago.Boffin Omaya Dudin said: "Multicellular coordination is already present in the species, well before the first animals appeared." Previous research suggested hard-shelled eggs did not emerge until 300m years ago.And nature only produced chickens about 10,000 years ago.
