And of the pensioners quizzed, 8% said they hadn't scrubbed their toilet in the past six months. The study also found 11% of those aged 55 to 64 confessed to putting their health at risk by rarely bothering.
Millennials were the most hygienic, followed by Generation Z.
And women were more likely to avoid cleaning the toilet than men. Johanna Constantinou, of Tapi Carpets &amp; Floors who conducted the study, said: "It's important to make sure we take extra care to clean toilets.
"Exposure to yeast, germs and bacteria - which can be found in dust and grime - can lead to a variety of illnesses."
Geordies were also shamed in the findings, with people from Newcastle the least likely to clean their loo. A poll of 2,000 people, asked to reveal their cleaning habits around the house, found they were the least likely to don a pair of marigolds and give their bowl a scrub.
Sheffield folk ranked second-worst, with Cardiff third. Households in Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol and London were the cleanest.
