MORE than 100 dog owners are giving up their pets every day due to rocketing "dogflation".
The Dogs Trust had 45,000 requests from people about off-loading their canines last year. That works out at 125 a day.
The rehoming charity said it has seen "unprecedented demand" as the cost of looking after pooches rises at more than twice the rate of inflation.
To help with the problem, the charity has set up dogfood banks at rehoming centres.
Owen Sharp, chief executive of Dogs Trust, said: "There is a direct correlation between people struggling to afford their dogs and the numbers wanting to give them up."
The charity commissioned Capital Economics to probe the level of "dogflation".
Human food inflation was 8% last year, but over the same period the cost of a can of dogfood had gone up by 15%.
Mr Sharp added: "You hear things such as manufacturing costs are higher but you wouldn't really expect them to be disproportionately higher than the production of human food. So is there an issue going on in retail? I don't know."&nbsp;
