VIOLENCE and abuse against shop workers has soared to around 1,300 incidents per day.
And the amount lost to shoplifting has hit a record high, the British Retail Consortium's latest annual survey found.
It has slammed "inadequate" action taken by the Government to address the "crisis".
The number of incidents against staff rose by 50% in the year&nbsp;to September 2023, from 870 per day the year before. Some 8,800 of those resulted in injury.
The incidents from abuse to sexual harassment and physical assaults tripled during the Covid pandemic. But they have remained significantly higher than before Covid hit.
The BRC study, which includes more than 200 major chains, also found the number of thefts doubled to 16.7million incidents, while shoplifting costs to retailers hit &pound;1.8billion.
Helen Dickinson, the BRC's chief executive, said: "With over 1,300 incidents every day, Government can no longer ignore the plight of ordinary, hardworking retail colleagues. No one should have to go to work fearing for their safety. This is a crisis that demands action now!"&nbsp;
