But towards the end of the 20th century its popularity nosedived as continental lagers flooded the market.
Tesco buyer Christian Clark said: "There has been a general rediscovery of traditional British beer tastes brought about by the craft beer boom.
"A younger audience has emerged looking for beers with great character and exceptional flavour to challenge their taste buds."
He said Tesco now stocked 15 stouts, something "unthinkable five years ago".
