CLIMATE change could be made even worse by artificial intelligence, says the new boss of BP.
Murray Auchincloss said each search in AI tools such as a ChatGPT consumes 10 times the energy of a standard internet browser inquiry.
That is because of the wealth of calculations done by bots.
As the use of bots grows so will the need for fuels to power them.
The energy giant boss, inset, said his company would ramp up gas production in the coming years.
Mr Auchincloss said: "Gas production will probably go a little bit lower this decade and then grow significantly as we move into the following decades.
"Generative AI is something that's&nbsp;creating an even higher level of demand for electricity." The amount of energy consumed by the 8,000 data centres globally will soar by 73% to 800 terawatt hours by 2026, according to the International Energy Agency.
By comparison consumes 321 terawatt hours of electricity a year the UK Mr Auchincloss, said the company was taking a "pragmatic" approach to the green energy transition.
But Jonathan NoronhaGant, of Global Witness, which safeguards natural resources, said BP shareholders should be "demanding a rapid clean energy transition", to protect the firm's long-term future.
