The House of Lords AI in Weapon Systems Committee is holding an inquiry into how autonomous weapons should be developed, used and regulated.
But an expert contributor granted anonymity said the "breathtaking" speed of Al tech posed a threat to human life.
The expert said: "Under no circumstances should thinking machines, whose power is barely understood, be integrated into the defence of the realm or given the freedom to kill.
"AI may be the greatest threat we face as a species. The inability of legislation to keep up with such technology is troubling."
An MoD spokesman said: "We are committed to a fully legal and ethical approach to the development and use of Al-enabled technologies."
