PRESIDENT Joe Biden authorised military action in the Middle East after three US troops were killed in a drone strike in Jordan.
US officials approved plans for a series of strikes on Iranian targets in Syria and Iraq.
The strikes would take place over several days with weather conditions likely to dictate launches, officials said.
The US blamed an Iranian-backed militia group, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, for the Jordan attack. It is believed to contain militias that have been armed, funded and trained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards force and has claimed responsibility for Sunday's strike.
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said: "We will take all necessary actions to protect our troops and defend the US, our interests and our people."
The Jordan drone attack that killed Sgt William Jerome Rivers, 46, and specialists Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, and Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, also injured at least 40 troops at Tower 22 base.
