BIGGER BILLS TO RESCUE ENERGY FIRMS

FAMILIES could be asked to hand over an extra £17 a year to bail out energy suppliers. 

Watchdog Ofgem is mulling over the move after firms built up £2.6billion debts.

Tim Jarvis, of the regulator, said: “The scale of unrecoverable debt and the potential risk of suppliers going bust, means we must look at all the regulatory options available to us.”

If approved, any hike to the cap would be delayed until April.
